Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about CFIUSCheck — the data, the analysis, access tiers, and what the results mean for CFIUS counsel and M&A practitioners.

The Service
What does CFIUSCheck do? +
CFIUSCheck calculates the straight-line distance from a user-supplied parcel centroid to every installation listed on the CFIUS Appendix A (31 CFR Part 802), using primary-source government coordinates. It returns a Part 1 threshold check (1-mile), a Part 2 threshold check (100-mile), and a Part 3 ICBM field county check against the 48 counties covering the three active missile wings. Results include a full proximity table, an interactive map with range rings, and a printable white-paper PDF report.
Is this legal advice? +
No. CFIUSCheck is an informational tool only. Results do not constitute legal advice, a legal opinion, or a determination of CFIUS filing obligations.
CFIUS jurisdiction depends on multiple factors beyond proximity, including transaction structure, the identity of the foreign person, and applicable exemptions. Proximity to an Appendix A installation does not automatically require a CFIUS filing. Absence of proximity does not eliminate all CFIUS considerations. Consult qualified CFIUS counsel for filing determinations.
How current is the data? +
The CFIUS Appendix A installation list reflects the December 2024 revision — the most recent as of publication. Installation coordinates are from the DoD MIRTA dataset, August 2025. USDA AFIDA holdings data is from calendar year 2024. Law Firm Plan subscribers receive dataset update notifications when a new Appendix A revision is published.
How is distance calculated? +
Distance is calculated using the Haversine great-circle formula from the query point (parcel centroid) to the centroid of each Appendix A installation. This is point-to-point, not boundary-to-boundary. For large installations, the actual boundary may be closer than the reported distance. The Haversine result is noted as conservative in the report methodology. All 219 active CONUS installations are checked on every query.
What is the Part 3 ICBM county check? +
31 CFR Part 802 Appendix A covers 48 counties associated with the three active ICBM missile wings: the 90th Missile Wing (F.E. Warren AFB — Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado), the 341st Missile Wing (Malmstrom AFB — Montana), and the 91st Missile Wing (Minot AFB — North Dakota). Coverage for these counties is county-level, not radius-based — the entire county is covered regardless of proximity to a specific installation. CFIUSCheck checks the query coordinates against NOAA county centroid data to identify which county the parcel is in, then matches that county against the 48-county ICBM list.
Can I use a report in client files or CFIUS submissions? +
Reports are generated from primary-source government data, are timestamped, include a unique report ID, and cite their methodology in full. They are suitable for inclusion in client due diligence files and as supporting documentation in CFIUS submissions. They are not a substitute for legal analysis by qualified CFIUS counsel. Per the Terms of Use, reports generated for a subscribing client may be used in client files and regulatory submissions for that client’s matter.

Reply to your welcome email or write to contact@cfiuscheck.com and we will send a Stripe customer portal link. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. You retain full access until that date. No prorated refunds are issued for partial months except as required by law.
Do you offer complimentary access for reporters or researchers? +
Yes. Journalists, academic researchers, and regulatory staff covering CFIUS and foreign investment policy may request complimentary access by writing to contact@cfiuscheck.com. Include your name, affiliation, and a brief description of how you intend to use the tool.
Technical
Can I enter an address instead of coordinates? +
Yes. The “Geocode & Analyze” tab accepts any U.S. address. The tool geocodes it via OpenStreetMap Nominatim and automatically populates the coordinate fields. For ICBM field counties, the tool also attempts to identify the county FIPS code from the coordinates. If the geocode result is imprecise, you can correct the coordinates manually before running the analysis.
How do I save or print the report? +
Click the “Print / Save as PDF” button on any report. The page switches to a white-paper layout with 4cm margins, navy typography, and color-coded risk indicators suitable for client files. In Chrome, enable “Background graphics” in the print dialog (More settings) to ensure the map tiles and table header colours print correctly. Firefox and Safari print backgrounds by default.
